Quiet Board

Postby TunaLoser » Thu Jul 22, 2010 6:50 pm

The board has been very quiet lately, although there seems to be a lot of fish out there this year. So I thought that I'd pose a question to hopefully start some discussion. I read this board for info and find it very helpful, so I will offer what I have experienced this year to give back to the fishermen out there that I have benefited from.
Just curious how many fish you have caught out there, avg size and what you have found to be successful. I have hooked up 5 times, some have been real brief, painfully brief (under 10 minutes) and I have fought a few fish over an hour. All on spinning gear. I lug out the 80's and troll but never have much luck with this approach north of Cape Anne, NW corner is a different story. Good news is that I have seen fish close to home this year so I haven't had to make the trip south.
hooked up on L-Jack once, 2 oz crippled herring once, once on a homemade fly tied on a jig head and twice on a live macks. I am still Tuna-less this year, maybe I should go south, they seem to be more aggressive on the bank. I have been out approx a dozen times and I have seen a lot action but hook up ratio is way down considering the number of fish out there. (lost by pulled hooks twice, gill net once and chaffed leader twice..90 lb)

Anyone else have similar experience this year? What is working?
I understand that I may not get many responses and that's understandable, but thought I'd share none the less.

Too much bait out there...hook-up rates are low brother. Bait is small herring making it difficult to match and be noticed.

I think the board is so quiet because if your finding fish close to home people don't want the hordes of boats around. Kind of sucks in a way but i can't blame guys...they would rather let everyone stay on the NWC/SWC corners.

Good luck out there, there are alot fish from Maine to MA right now.
Fresh water is for drinking, Saltwater is for Fishing...

I'm not afraid to share, hell fish are not in the same area for long anyways. Saw lots of fish in close yesterday only a few miles out between Cape Anne and the shoals. Saturday we saw sporadic jumpers from halfway to cove, prong, first and second island and Scantum. Not consistent like they have been the last few weeks but they were still there.
Funny how everyone is so tight lipped down here, must be a New England thing and I am from here. I fished commercially for a while out of Nova Scotia out to the Hell Hole. Everyone out there shared everything, from depth, leaders, to what they had for breakfast. Different culture I guess eh. Water was warm on Jefferies yet the deep water had a lot more activity. Tossed everything in my bag and live macks into quick feeds, out of desperation through out a pollack as well.
No luck
We looked for the "24 white shark" that was spotted outside the Merrimack river, wonder if that was the same guy that landed the blue shark last year at the mouth and called it a thresher, steaked it up for all his friends as I recall. Grilled Dogs, helluva barb-q. WMUR bot it hook line and sinker though.

We saw three basking sharks on the surface in Ipswich bay, I am guessing that is what the guy saw.

Well persistence pays off, went out of GBM pre dawn and saw a lot of activity north of Scantum and then just east of Boone, landed a 53' fish on a yo zuri deep diver. thought it was a striper at first til he knew he was hooked, then the game was on. Took about 20 minutes to get him to the boat. What a great day to be out there today. weather was insane! On a side note, caught first bluefish of the year on a live mack.
