PI Sound – no love

Postby DaleH » Sat Sep 24, 2016 8:54 pm

Left dock 5am, saw 7 other boats out, saw only 1 school fish caught. Wind up early, tough to see any surface action, that was non-existent anyway. Had fresh tinkers … nothing, nada, could smell the skunk …

Friends out of Lynn and Winthrop only caught 2 fish each.

Get back to the dock, talk to some clammers I know … they said the Parker was LOADED w/ pogies yesterday …

Fished yesterday 930-330. Only 2 fish. One 26", the other about 18". Along Grape. But the water was thick with bait from the point where the little house used to be over to Pavilion, out to the bell buoy, and over to Emerson’s. Not a single predator fish encountered. Torture. Big sand eels between the bars and the bell buoy. Highlight of the day was jumping Sturgeon. I was confused at first, having only either heard, or heard and saw only the splash/wake. Then I got a good look or two. Definitely not bass (which my crazed mind was leading me to). Until finally one jumped 3-4 feet in the air about 10 foot in front of the boat… scared the shit out of me. But I was looking right at it. Very cool! I have never encountered that many sturgeon jumps in a single outing before. Probably 10-15 over two hours.

Wow, from your report of the bait reminds me of last fall where the sound was full of herring fry, everywhere you went, but no signs of fish. Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat. Hope to get out this Friday.

Fished yesterday 10:00-3:00. Sound had a lot of small bass (like micro small), and there was some bait hanging around in there. Very small bait. Got a couple of low 20" fish along Grape, and a bunch of micros. Ocean was pretty swelly, even close to high tide. Could not hit all the areas I wanted to. Still lots of sand eels from the outer edge of the Sandy Point/Crane’s Bars out to the bell buoy. But no bass that I was able to see, hear, or catch. Sturgeon acrobatics were not as frequent as Monday, but still happening. Got a good look at a big one jump like 4′ high – fish was probably 48". Seals numerous. Trying again tomorrow morn, probably the last trip out with the boat. Will likely try some shore fishing Beverly-Gloucester in the next week or two.

Fished this morn 730-1130. Near perfect conditions. School of mostly dinks had bait on the run from the IBYC almost up to Eagle Hill River flats. Sporadic surface outbursts, got a few low 20’s fish but mostly dinks. Still plenty of bait over the bars but no feeding bass. Got a bunch of smaller fish at a favorite spot along Grape. One nice one at 24", rest mostly dinks. Best trip this week though.

Fished the IBYC Shoreline with my flyrod Sunday morning good bite from 6-7:30 mostly small fish fish though. It was a good tide and I had higher expectation. Bite shutdown when it started to blow up out of the NE …or maybe it was me who shut down. Hopefully we haven’t seen the last of the better sized fish inside.

Fished this morn, 630-1100. Last trip of the season. Cleaned up the boat to put away for winter. Still tons of bait offshore. Lots of very small bass busting bait over the bars. Herons and egrets have left. Gannets have arrived in pretty large numbers. Lots of seals too.

Fished this afternoon. Grabbed Macs with no problem out of Essex. Took them to Rockport and didn’t find anything. Headed to Steep hill and sandy point and had a small fish on a surface lure. Nothing on the macs. Wasn’t the perfect tide, but that probably ends my season. Not sure where the fish are. Maybe further south…
